What about coherence?
One thing I’ve enjoyed about working outside lately is listening to the old timers radio - AM. You do know that FM is a relatively new thing? I remember when all the stations were on AM!
Anyway, what I’ve noticed is that there is soooo much enviro talk on the radio lately. Not all of it is good mind you with the drought and struggling farmers. At least there is consciousness about the topic now. I have also been receiving a number of campaigns and website links. There is definitely a lot going on now. Here are a few more links:
This morning, I received another link to the GetUp! campaign…
After four long terms of denial, this week the Howard Government is making its anticipated back flip on climate change with a million dollar giveaway for ‘clean’ fossil fuels and even some renewable energy. It’s official: the Prime Minister can no longer afford to ignore climate change. And we can’t afford to be fooled.
Of course, I signed up and put my name on the map. I then wondered about the effectiveness of these various campaigns and events? Certainly they will each help raise awareness within their own sphere of influence. Also, as any marketing student knows, it takes multiple “asks” to finally get the sale, so this is also a good thing.
I can’t help thinking, do we need something bigger? Something to co-ordinate all these events? Something to bring coherence and power to it all?
What ever happened to the Greens party? You don’t seem to hear much from them these days. What happened to Peter Garrett joining the Labor party? He’s the shadow minister for “reconciliation and the arts”. Seems like a waste to me.
I sure hope this topic continues to build momentum and not only regarding water and the drought. We need a whole lot more and the city folk need to get involved too.
First we made some measurements and went down to the timber yard to pick up some, ahh, yeah, you know, wood. This lot of wood will form the next layer of the deck - the bearers. They span the length of the stumps in rows and you would usually place joists on top of them. Since this is quite a low deck, we’re going to place the decking timber right onto the bearers so we have placed them extra close together.

It wasn’t clay. The water pipe we had “loosened” shot out mud
The interface itself is also quite “artistic”. The viewer can roll the sphere around and randomly hit one of the panels. This panel represents a user/profile in the capsule. Whilst the site is built mostly in Macromedia/Adobe Flash, it does have some nice search and tagging facilities.
Today we started preparing the ground for the new decking. After giving the overgrown lawn a haircut, we took a few good measurements and began constructing a few hurdles. They’re certainly no work of art themselves, but they do the job quite nicely. The hurdles are used to tie string lines to so you can begin lining everything up straight and to ensure you have nice right angled corners. Who ever said we wouldn’t use that pythagoras crap in the real world!
Reading this helped me to remember a conversation I had with a lecturer when I was at university. We were discussing the pros and cons of magentic tape vs. compact/digital disc and how long each medium will last. Magnetic tape has been used for a very long time now. If stored properly, it has shown that it can last decades without degradation. CD and other similar digital media has yet proved to last as long. Most read-write compact discs will only last a few years at best. Glass pressed discs may fare better.
